ASSISTANT POSITION
CONSERVATION PROJECT

Naucrates is currently accepting applications for two ASSISTANT positions for the 2010 – 2011 season of the Sea Turtle Project. The project will be based at Lion village on Phra Thong Island, Thailand.
Project background: Phra Thong Island is located 200 km north of Phuket, in Kura Buri District, Phang Nga province. It is part of a group of three islands and is considered, even if there are only few turtles left, one of the main sea turtle nesting sites left along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand. These sites are under pressure from fishing activities, egg poaching and uncontrolled tourism development.
Since 1996, Naucrates has been running a conservation project in collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) with the help of many volunteers from all over the world who are coordinated by a field leader and assistants during each season. The main activities include monitoring nesting beaches, nest protection, behavioural observation, environmental education in the local school, awareness and education in the village, and public awareness with a few tourists. Period: one person from 5th December 2010 to 10th February 2011; one person from 5th February 2011 to 10th April 2011.
Duties
- help the field leader in the role of co-ordinating volunteers, monitoring activities and boat transfers
- organise awareness activities and lessons in the school and for volunteers
- English lessons, fund raising activities, creation of materials for a display area, workshops in the local school, etc.
- data entry and revision on a daily basis under the field leader supervision.
- Compile a final report at the end of the project according to Naucrates’ model and request
Requirements:
Ideal candidates should:
- have experience in other turtle conservation projects or other fieldwork and be able to conduct survey on the filed.
- be in good physical condition since walking long distances (15kms a day) and working for long hours under the heat of the sun is often needed
- be able to work in a group
- possess a BSc in Biology or a related field, or be a student in a related field (e.g. biology, ecology, social sciences, environmental education)
- be able to live in a rustic and remote environment (fishing village) under warm and humid conditions;
- have a firm commitment of stay for the chosen period (essential to Naucrates)
- have a good command of the English language (mandatory).
Salary/Stipend or Expenses:
Assistants cover their own travel expenses to and from the island. Accommodation and food is provided within the Lion Village at the Naucrates site.

FIELD LEADER POSITION
SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION PROJECT

Naucrates is currently accepting applications for the position of FIELD LEADER for the 2010-11 season of the Sea Turtle Project.

Period: from 10th January to 10th April 2011
Duties:
- Manage the project team, solving any possible issues with the team
- Coordinating the monitoring aspect of the work according to Naucrates' methodology; ensuring that all data collected is correctly collected and entered in Naucrates' databases
- Collaborate with local people together with the translator
- Implementing nest protection measures as per the guidelines issued by Naucrates. These include relocating, protection and hatching observation
- Write progress reporting to project leader in Italy
- Manage project finances in the field; keeping accounts, receiving volunteer payments, making local payments and managing the gift shop sales
- Co-ordinating night surveys (if required) for observing nest hatching, protecting the hatchlings while going to the sea and taking biometric data
- Co-ordinating boat transfers according to the monitoring needs
- Training and supervising the volunteers working on the project area
- Digitalize all data and participate in the creation of the project final report
- Training local villagers or other member of local organizations
- At the end of the project's activities compiling a final report according to Naucrates’ model.
Requirements - Ideal candidates should:
- be over 22 years of age
- have good communication and human resource management skills
- have a firm commitment to stay for the whole period of the project (20th January -10th April 2010).
- be able to work independently with minimum supervision
- be able to live in a rustic and remote environment (fishing village)
- have a good command of the English language (mandatory)
- be in good physical condition since walking long distances and working for long hours under the heat of the sun is often needed
- possess a BSc in Biology or a related field
- have experience in other turtle conservation projects (preferred)
Salary/Stipend or Expenses:
The Field Leader covers their own travel expenses to and from the island. Accommodation and food is provided within the Lion Village at the Naucrates site. Naucrates provides a small monthly spending allowance.

Project Assistant - Conservation Project
Translator – Teacher - Community Facilitator

The position involves working with NAUCRATES and the Mangrove Action Project (MAP), two non-government organizations actively working on the conservation of natural resources, especially mangrove forest and sea turtles.
Project Objectives: Maintain and develop communications and collaboration between the local community and the international project; Conduct fieldwork and conservation activities, Strengthen local community capacity to implement conservation programmes; Increase scientific knowledge on the biology and conservation of marine turtles and other natural resources surrounding Koh Phra Thong; Increase the awareness of mangrove forest ecology and conservation; Implement an environmental education programme in the community school; Establish a positive-sustainable relationship between ecotourism, conservation and community economic development
Qualifications Required:
- Qualification as teacher or experience working with children
- Basic knowledge of nature conservation and biology to be able to conduct environmental education activities in the local school
- Good knowledge of both spoken and written Thai/English language / Southern Thai dialect is preferred
- Thai nationality is preferred
- Be able to write update and final reports in English
- Able to work as a part of an international team on a small remote island
- Be able to work live in and work with a small isolated community
- Be physically fit
Overview of Position Role: The Project Assistant (PA) will work with Naucrates turtle monitoring team and MAP project coordinator. The PA will work under supervision of MAP coordinator and Naucrates Project Director and have the responsibility to carry out project activities. The PA will contact the headmaster of the school and set up an environmental education program in the local school during school time or after school. The PA will follow Naucrates/MAP curriculum and will prepare a lesson plan for the season. The PA will teach English to school children and villagers. PA will be in charge of communicating with villagers, organizing meetings and interviews in order to identify their needs and to facilitate and implement conservation programmes on the island. The PA will work with Naucrates Team Leader and Assistant sharing responsibilities. Duties include working as the translator to facilitate communication between the project team and the villagers and teaching basic spoken Thai language to the international volunteers. The PA will take part in other conservation activities such as monitoring turtle nesting beaches, conservation awareness activities among the local community, and others developed
Accommodation: Room will be provided in Thai style houses at Lion village. The PA will share a house with Naucrates and MAP staff. Electricity will be available after 18.00 every day until about 22.00 in the evening.
Schedule: Four months full time position starting from 5/12/2010 until 10/04/11. There will be the possibility to renew the contract.
Salary: 12.000 Baht / month. Food and accommodation will be provided by Naucrates and MAP while working on the island. Candidates will need to be able to cover their own travel expenses to the island and have their own insurance.
