Project Assistant Translator – Environmental Educator,
Community facilitator

Community natural resource conservation and management project
Lion Village, Phra Thong Island, Phang Nga, Thailand


The successful candidate will work with NAUCRATES and the Mangrove Action Project (MAP), two organizations that are actively working toward the conservation of natural resources, especially the mangrove forest and sea turtles. The main objectives of the project are: introduce environmental friendly practices to improve the living conditions of the Lion Village Community; strengthening of local community capacity to implement conservation programs; increase scientific knowledge on the biology and conservation of marine turtles surrounding Koh Phra Thong and involve local communities in the conservation of these endangered species by protecting their habitats (nesting beach and feeding grounds at sea); increase the awareness of mangrove forest ecology and conservation; implement an environmental education programme in the school; develop a homestay programme for Thai and foreign visitors; establish a positive-sustainable relationship between ecotourism, conservation and community economic development.

Lion Village is a new community, built after the tsunami, which was funded by Lions Club International to house people from several different villages on Phra Thong Island.

Students/graduates requirements:
Previous experience in working with children and in remote communities is an asset. Basic knowledge of nature conservation and biology is necessary in order to be able to conduct environmental education activities in the local school.

Overview of position:
The Project Assistant (PA) will be working with MAP project coordinator and Naucrates monitoring team. The PA will work under supervision of MAP coordinator and have the responsibility to carry on project activities. The PA will conduct an environmental education program in the local school and will teach basic English. PA will be in charge of communicating with villagers, organizing meetings and interviews in order to identify their needs and to facilitate the realization of conservation programmes on the island. From January to April, PA will collaborate with Naucrates monitoring team sharing responsibilities with Naucrates team leader. Duties include working as translator to facilitate communication between the team and the villagers; teaching basic Thai to international volunteers. The PA will take part in other conservation activities such as monitoring nesting beaches, conservation awareness activities among the local community etc.

Time Frame: six months, full time position starting from the 10/10/2008 until 15/04/09. There is the possibility to renew the contract if performance is satisfactory.

Salary: salary is of 12.000 Baht per month. Food and accommodation will be provided by Naucrates and MAP.
Candidates will need to be able to cover their own travel expenses to the island and have their own insurance.

Accommodation: a room will be available in Thai tsunami houses at Lion village. Electricity will be available after 18.00 every day until about 22.00 at night.

Key requirements:
• Good knowledge of Thai/English language. Southern Thai is preferred.
• Experience in working with children and villagers; Basic knowledge of biology and conservation
• Be able to write a final report and provide regular updates of progress and problems
• Able to work closely and as a part of an international team on a small and remote island
• Be able to work mostly alone with a small community, to organize, facilitate & encourage
• Be physically fit. Be able to swim and having knowledge of basic first aid training and safety is beneficial
• Be responsible for project budget, and keep track of expenses and prepare basic financial report
