TSUNAMI
QUAKE AT KHO PHRA THONG, THAILAND
It is broken hearts
that we announce the loss of two
members of the NAUCRATES team who were
working at KHO PHRA THONG when the
tsunami wave hit the island, taking many
lives, buildings, years of research
work and everything that was its way;
leaving those who survived in a state of
shock and terror.
Our friends and collegues Lisa Jones
from the UK and Rebecca Clark from
Canada/USA lost their young lives on
December 26th 2004, a date that we will
certainly remember as one we would like
to forget.
Also members of the Thai GBB staff,
Lung Pan
(carpenter), Lung Lue (gardener), Ae
(waitress), and young Duan (driver)
and always took care of the turtles
during our absence from the GBB).
We will always remember them as our
special friends. |

DUAN
has been working for the resort since
about 7 years as jeep driver. He was an
hard worker and he was the one helping
the project a lot. Since we started to
keep few turtles in captivity for the
education programme he was dedicating
his free time during the rainy season to
feed them and to change the water of the
tank.
|
|
He
helped us during school activities
and he was always ready to go and
rescue turtles, to collect eggs on
the beach, to drive during the night
for the project.
|
|
|
LUNG PAN, the
carpenter.
He was working at the resort since I
(Monica) arrived there (1996).
He was our friend always talking to
us and helping with our
constructions.
A smiling person that we will miss a
lot.
|
|
|
Khun Ae, a waiteress working there
since few years.
She loved to wear different clothes
every day and to tell us stories.
She was always elegant and nice with
us.
|
|
 |
Lung Lue,
the gardener working there
since few years.
Unfortunately we do not have
his pictures. He was a
special friend coming
everyday next to our camp
watering plants.
He was taking care during
the rainy season of all
Claudio's mangroves and
other plants.

WORDS FROM A VOLUNTEER:
RAY
I had spent time in 2001-2002 and
2003 working on the turtle project on Koh Phra Thong. It had become my
paradise found and the Thai people had made it my second home.
I became a pain in the side to
Lung Pan at first as I begged ,borrowed and stole his tools wood
and his one and only size screws. Naucrates or should I say Monica
decided I should become their odd job man. As long as Lung Pan could
over see my work he accepted me and I became his apprentice and friend.
Lung
Luay found my efforts at being understood
rather amusing as I do not speak Thai and relied on sign language.
Throughout my 3 visits
Duan the quite one was always there to feed
the turtles with the fish he had caught for them.
His love of the turtles
became an inspiration for all us the volunteers. A turtle we released
was named in his honor and still swims the oceans of the world.
On my second visit to my
embarrassment Ae declared her love for me,
to avoid any misunderstanding I then declared my love for Lucy a team
leader, which in turn embarrassed Lucy who had designs on some one else.
The beautiful
Lisa a gentle person who's smile could light up a darkened room.
In this mad world we live in friendship is a wonderful thing and can out
last relationships and to lose a friend is to lose a loved one.
I would like to thank my very dear
friends for being my friend.
