8 VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR A POST TSUNAMI CLEANING AND ASSESSMENT PROJECT
OF THE MANGROVE FOREST AT PHRA THONG ISLAND

16 - 31 July 2005

Target Area

Tidal creek (about ~1.5 km long) on the West coast of Phra Thong Island.

Cleaning Project

Naucrates staff visited Phra Thong Island, for the first time after the tsunami, on the 25 th of May 05. The impact of the tsunami on the coastal environment is evident. While some areas were hit strongly, changing the physiognomy of the coast, other areas were hit with less violence and impact.

During this visit particular attention was given to the tidal creek (See first photo) next to the project base. While it was not evaluated scientifically the impact of the tsunami is evident. The mechanic action of the wave, sedimentation and high salinity have killed most of the trees.

A brief assessment was made inside the tidal creek at low tide. It was noted that a lot of debris (See second photo), transported by the wave, has been entangled into the vegetation. Materials from the resorts (Golden Buddha Beach and Kratom Moken) that were completely washed away, is now accumulated inside the creek (See last photo).

First thoughts of Naucrates staff (Monica and Claudio) were that it is very sad and quite inappropriate to leave such large amounts of debris in the natural environment. It is now the rainy season and hopefully some of the trees will recover. In so doing the debris would remain forever.

Naucrates, with support of Mangrove Action Project (MAP), North Andaman Tsunami Fund (NATR) and Golden Buddha Members Committee (GBMC), have organized a two week cleaning project from the 16 th to the 31 st July 2005.

The working team, led by Claudio Conti (Naucrates), will consist of 8 Thai local workers and 8 volunteers. The local workers will receive a wage. This will give them the opportunity to a have short-term employment during the rainy season. The 8 volunteers will have food and lodging expenses covered. Volunteers are expected to cover their own travel expenses to and from the island and their own insurance costs.

Transport

Transport will be organized by Naucrates: a boat will be at the Kura Buri pier at 11 am on the 16 July going to Tapaioi village and then a car to the Golden Buddha Beach. The same arrangement will be arranged for the 31 st July - the day of departure. The cost to be covered is 2000 Baht (about 35 Euro).

Requirements

  • While no experience is needed, you must be willing to work hard as the project will require walks into the mangroves in warm and humid conditions.
  • Volunteers are expected to be physically fit and to be able to work in a team.
  • Volunteers need to be aware that they will be working in a remote tropical island, during the rainy season and so need to be prepared to live without night life, shops and television, etc.
  • Any health issues must be communicated before booking.
