Wildlife Gardening Week in Italy |

Wildlife Nature Reserve |
 |
3 -10 August 2008 |
Purpose |
Wildlife gardening is one element of a wider picture of
wildlife conservation that Naucrates would like to promote
throughout Italy.
Gardens form important
corridors linking urban, suburban and rural landscapes,
allowing wildlife to move from one environment to another.
Gardens can help to fill in gaps by providing environments
that are otherwise missing locally.
|
During our daily lives we are
involved in a routine that very often takes us away from
nature and its beauty. Our attention is often focused on
wildlife conservation away from our homes and we do not
realize that even a small garden can make a difference to
our local areas. Naucrates is now promoting the message that
wildlife conservation can start from your own home.
Naucrates will teach you
about creating your own garden nature reserve balancing the
requirements of your gardening interests with those of the
plants and animals using the reserve.
|
The Course |
Each day will consist of discussions about wildlife
gardening techniques, practical sessions and workshops,
guided afternoon field trips, and free time to practice. We
will also host a small exhibition of the work at the end of
the course. All participants will be given a certificate of
attendance of the course, and a one year membership to
Naucrates.
Includes:
-
Introduction to the Basic Principles of wildlife gardening
- Practical workshops on how to build nest boxes, ponds,
etc.
- A guided visit in the local area
- Accommodation in typical Italian rural houses
- One year Naucrates membership

 |
Location |
Italian countryside where
agricultural landscape dominates the flat land located near the Thyrrhenian Sea. A land of olive groves and woods in
the Lazio Hills, about 20 km from the Sea and 40 km south of
Rome.
Accommodation will be
provided in Cori,
a small village nestled on a hill and still supported by the
original ancient cyclopic walls, where remains of temples,
ruins and churches accompany the visitor through to the 20th
Century. A place of mythology (Jason and Argonauts,
Ulysses), the site of numerous battles (first with the
Volsci, Latins and Romans and later as a refuge for Lucio
Silla during the war with Mario), and currently divided into
three Rioni corresponding to the three accesses into the
town. To the present day a traditional horse race (Palio
delle Contrade) and a costume parade is held during the
summer months, which makes Cori an enchanting place.
