Naucrates is
planning to continue the Sea Turtle Conservation Project at Phra
Thong Island.
Last season, researchers and volunteers monitored the nesting
beach daily and protected all the nests. The beach is split into
two different sections, one of 5 kms and one of 10kms. The team
was able to monitor only some of the beach by walking 10 kms per
day.
In previous
years, villagers have been able to monitor and protect nests
laid at the southern end of the island, which is 10 kms away
from our base. Last season, the first after the tsunami, we
realised that local people have not returned to the beach and
therefore we do not have their support in our monitoring effort.
For this reason, funds were invested in renting a boat to reach
the southern end of the beach, but the monitoring was not
conducted on a daily basis.
