Knowledge for Conservation: this short motto prompted Monica, Claudio and Maura, who all shared this common interest, to meet in 2001 and found the organisation known as Naucrates; a not-for-profit organisation registered in Italy as Onlus.
Guided by enthusiasm for nature and conservation, Naucrates carries out programmes in a variety of countries facing cultural differences and financial constraints.
Naucrates’ geographical range is limited and sometimes inaccessible; however, the attention and dedication that Naucrates researchers, collaborators and volunteers show in developing conservation programmes is admirable. It is thanks to these people that Naucrates has collected and analysed considerable information, which is then used to apply conservation strategies to aid the protection of habitats and endangered species, etc.
Alongside this, Naucrates runs environmental education programmes for the younger generations with the aim of delivering future management of natural resources following sustainable principles by local communities.
I am an enthusiastic conservationist. I believe in natural and simple things, I do not like technology and dependency from commodities.
In 2001, I met with Claudio and Maura and we set up Naucrates in order to contribute to the conservation of nature with a practical and scientific approach.
I graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Milan (Italy) and I obtained a MSc in Conservation Biology, at Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, University of Kent, UK.
Since 2004, Member of Marine Turtle Specialist Group, IUCN, Mediterranean Region Group.
Since 1996 I have led and supervised the Naucrates Conservation Project at Phra Thong Island in Thailand. I carried out and led the fieldwork for many years, until the tsunami hit the project. Since then I became the project supervisor, leading a team and coordinating the project.
I am one of the 3 founders of Naucrates organization and the founder of Naucrates Mangrove Restoration Project at Phra Thong Island.
I studied natural sciences at the University of Rome. I showed a particular Love for the nature since I was a child. I define myself as an “old fashion naturalist”, I do observe and take notes with a notebook and a pencil….
I was born in Italy, and already at an early age I developed a passion for nature and wildlife. Since my first visit in Thailand, a passion for mangrove forest matured and I spent my time exploring a tidal creek located on the West coast of the island. Through my observations I am able to apply ecological principles. A passion for trees that is unique. I don’t like to speak English or to use the computer.
Dr. Maura Spotti
Love and passion for animals brought me close to Naucrates. My back ground include a degree in Veterinary Medicine and PhD in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Milan Italy.
Now I work as Senior Clinical Research Associate/Project Manager but my dream is to open a rescue center for animals in need of help. I support Naucrates ideas and activites hoping to be able to work on the field more often.
